Anaheim Convention Center Transportation: Show Week Without the Logistics

The Anaheim Convention Center is one of the largest convention centers on the West Coast, and on a big show week it behaves like a small city that appears on Monday and disappears on Friday. It sits on Katella Avenue in the Anaheim Resort district, next door to the Disneyland Resort, with the I-5 a few blocks away. Trade shows, industry conferences and expos bring thousands of exhibitors and attendees into that same few blocks, most of them flying in, many of them arriving on the same flights. Getting there is rarely the hard part. The days themselves are.

What a convention week actually looks like

A typical three day show is not one trip. It is an airport arrival, a hotel check in, a morning drop off, a client dinner somewhere that is not walking distance, a late return, and an airport run at the end, often with booth materials or a sample case along for the ride. Each of those legs is short on the map and unpredictable in practice.

The Resort district also shares its streets. Katella and Harbor carry convention traffic, theme park traffic and hotel traffic at the same hours, and the morning rush to the halls lands right on top of the regular Orange County commute. On opening day, the curb outside the main entrance is one of the busiest places in Anaheim.

John Wayne or LAX

For most attendees, John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana is the closer and easier arrival, a short drive up the freeway to the Resort district. LAX offers more flights and more nonstop options, but it puts the 405 or the I-5 between you and your hotel, and at the wrong hour that drive can rival the flight itself. Rental cars and rideshare both work in Anaheim. The trouble is what they cost you in attention. A rental means event parking, a hotel garage and a car you are responsible for between sessions. Share your flight numbers when you book so arrivals can be timed to the actual landing, not the schedule. And if you are hosting clients, plan the dinner transport with the reservation; the restaurants worth taking a client to are usually a drive from the Resort district.
